This blog is about my favorite moments and how I document them along the way. I am a full time working mom to a wonderful one year old and loving wife to hubby of 5 years. Enjoy my favorite moments.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.comBlogger27125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-8449178388185148212011-03-06T20:16:00.000-05:002011-03-06T20:16:52.358-05:00Good-bye Awkward Closet, Hello Home Office

What the closet currently looks like.

Well, I have managed to talk my husband into moving ahead with changing the storage closet into his home office. As you can see in the picture, it isn't all bad....it does have a full size window! The closet also has it's own vent. The only thing we need to add is an electrical outlet. To be honest, the closet didn't function that well, the shelves were too deep and you could never reach the stuff in back. It is an awkward space that hopefully will function better as my husband's office. Right now I am busy clearing the shelves off and decluttering along the way.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-3974548995267295062011-02-27T19:45:00.002-05:002011-02-27T21:11:36.896-05:00Should I put my husband in the closet?

(example of our renovation clutter)

I haven't posted lately because I have been in the midst of decluttering not only my desk, but also trying to get the house under control before our second bundle of joy arrives at the end of May. The project list continues to grow.... my latest mission: find my husband a home office space.

Despite having a house with fairly large square footage we are out of rooms! Lil B will move into the bigger bedroom and new baby will have the nursery. It just so happens my husband works from home and is using the bigger bedroom as his office. Unfortunately, it won't work to share a toddler space and a home office space. I have a solution but my husband isn't quite on board yet. There is a storage closet on the second floor. It is a bit of an awkward space because it is long and rectangular. I think with a little creativity we can make this a home office space for not much money. Better than sticking him in the garage, right?Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-71018183770582592462011-02-06T20:28:00.000-05:002011-02-06T20:28:51.438-05:00Preggers and Nesting

The nesting instinct has kicked in. I rearranged the furniture in three rooms today...much to my husband's displeasure as he had to do the heavy lifting and I directed. I have posted before about our house and how it has been an ongoing project as we have redone everything from the floor to the ceilings in every room. As I look back we have made a lot of progress from when we were expecting Lil B. I am still hoping to get few more projects done before the arrival of 2.0! More details to come.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-22936213650661998842011-01-29T20:12:00.000-05:002011-01-29T20:12:39.228-05:00Messy Desk Makeover Part Two

I am going to be honest...it isn't just my desk that is cluttered and messy. The clutter trail extends through the house and there are certain areas that are not functional because of it. I am not talking Hoarder style just piles of things that need a home. For example, the dining room table is currently housing laundry and tupperware and random miscellaneous dishes that have not found a new home since our kitchen remodel.

Well, I have declared war on the clutter. However, it is not an overnight magical change. I knew if I wanted to change the way the house was I had to change me and start new habits but I did not know where to start. Then I came across the FlyLady. This website has a lot of information but they focus on starting with baby steps....this I could do. Start with one thing and gradually add on. It has only been two weeks but our house has changed even with taking the baby steps. I still have clutter on top of the dining room table for right now but I have a whole new outlook on clutter.

I am no way paid by FlyLady, just want to share what seems to be working for one busy full time working mom.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-14617392126463317962011-01-22T20:28:00.001-05:002011-01-22T20:37:54.950-05:00Welcome Blog Hoppers!

Notice all the toys being ignored in the background!

I like to think of myself as a resourceful person. As an Art teacher with a limited supply budget, I am always on the look out for using everyday things in new ways. This has carried over into my personal life as well. Sometimes the best toys are the things you have around the house.

Lil B' loves boxes. If he sees an empty diaper box he likes to pretend it is a car. We also had fun for 30 minutes by placing small cardboard scraps into an empty graham cracker box. He loved to shake it with the pieces inside and then tip it over and watch the pieces fall out. The fact this had his focus for 30 minutes was amazing to me. Do you have any favorite toys from ordinary household items?Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-76029562259275718722011-01-17T17:21:00.000-05:002011-01-17T17:21:16.596-05:00More Chicken Soup PleaseWhen I was little I remember my Grandmother making the best chicken noodle soup. We could really use some around our house today. All three of us have been stricken down with a nice viral infection. Of course it started at daycare and Lil B brought it home to us. As my husband and I both work full time it is always a struggle to find a way to stay home when Lil B is too sick to be at daycare. However, today we all are sick! What is your comfort food while sick?
My new years resolution is to keep up with my organization. I can be very organized at times...my problem is I am a piler, a creative mind that makes piles and piles of papers, things, or whatever! And then it gets out of control. I can't believe I am actually posting a picture of my desk in its current state but those who know me will not be surprised.

I have already started clearing and purging. The big question is will I be able to keep it a functional desk all year?
Every month we took a picture of him in a baseball chair (that his grandmother gave him). We plan on continuing to take a picture every year on his birthday...until he protests! The video is a great visual growth chart of his first year.
We knew enough that the kitchen remodel was out of our diy skills. And with a one year old I did not want a torn up kitchen for the entire summer. With a contractor we said good bye to the orange counterops, bisque appliances and cabinets (that could not be refinished)! We also knocked down a wall between the original kitchen and an eating area to create one larger kitchen. Our house is fairly large in square footage but the kitchen was tiny....you couldn't fit two people in it. With the wall knocked down the kitchen size seems to fit the house better. Enjoy some of the before and middle pictures, post picts to follow soon.

I know all my readers have been anxious to hear...what happened to Recession Renovation? Well, we did tackle the kitchen and we did start on the master bath (more on this later). However going back to work in the fall at a new school has kept me busy along with being a working full time mom. And one more thing to add...we have another bun in the oven. Fatigue really hits me hard in the first months of pregnancy. So, needless to say the blog has been sitting on the back burner. With the new year right around the corner, I have decided to give it another go. So stayed tuned you don't want to miss out!Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-30463288863219183712010-07-02T09:25:00.000-04:002010-07-02T09:25:09.248-04:00Taking a Trip?

But it is back to business! We are currently working on the kitchen and unlike some of the home improvement shows we have seen we know when we are out of our element. Our kitchen had to be totally gutted. There was no way to save the 30 year old orange countertops and falling apart particleboard cabinets. As novice diy'ers we knew we had to call for professionals. Take a look at the before pictures. Now don't despair, we will be posting DIY tips and how to save money on a kitchen remodel.
Well, it worked! We turned an old ugly green countertop into a "better looking" neutral faux stone countertop. It actually looks better than I thought. The lighting is still horrendous in the bathroom so please forgive the photographs. Below I will show you 5 easy steps to change that ugly countertop.
We attempted to start remodeling this bathroom before my husband lost his job. However, when we found out he lost his job and I was pregnant we stopped working on it. So this is what we are dealing with. We had already primed the walls, filled in the old mirror vanities and created a blank canvas for the walls. We are now in the midst of turning the ugly charteuse (charteuse can be a pretty color but not this 30 year old version) countertop in to a beautiful faux stone countertop. Remember we don't have the money we originally had set aside for remodeling, we are decorating on a shoestring budget or as I like to call it "Recession Renovation".Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-10049846880448344382010-04-15T19:53:00.001-04:002010-04-15T22:58:48.889-04:00Time Travel back to 1970 when Orange countertops were "in".

This blog is about being a new mother and balancing being a super mom along with still trying to be a super wife while working full time. I am now adding another element to that, DIY'er and decorator.

Let me back up a bit, two years ago before Lil' B joined our family we bought a house. It was nice, big, had lots of storage, perfect for starting a family except for one thing...it was still stuck in 1970. It had it all: shag carpeting, mirrored tiles, bronze vertical blinds, metallic butterfly wallpaper and, my personal favorite, orange countertops. But I had a vision for the house.

We started with smaller projects that we could do ourselves, the smallest bathroom and laundry room. We learned how to tile, how to change out electrical outlets, all sorts of fun stuff. Then my husband lost his job. Two weeks later I found out I was pregnant. Needless to say we put all the remodeling on hold.

It has been over a year now, and my husband does have a new job but unfortunately our monthly income is significantly lower. I went back to work after having the baby and our income is still significantly lower than when we made plans for the house. So here we are with a soon to be 1 year old son and a half done house. We are now modifying our original plans and coming up with creative ways to save money while finishing the house. Read along to follow us on our journey of "recession renovating" Here are some "before" pictures for your enjoyment.

Ok, so lil'b isn't a year old yet but I still thought I would share what we have done to document his growth each month. When I was pregnant my Mother-in-law bought us a baseball chair. My husband is a baseball fanatic so it seemed fitting since we were having a boy. (Although, I will find it funny when lil'b doesn't like baseball at all). Starting when lil'b was a month old we have taken a picture of him in the chair every month. It has been a great way to document his growth and personality along the way. Like the second month picture was taken after his shots, bad planning on my part or in his 9 month picture he fell out of the chair and tried to climb back in himself. I plan to do this for the first year. Not sure how I will continue after...my friends and family want to see him when he turns 16 holding the baseball chair. Don't think we will go that far but would make for a funny picture.

I have started creating a new video based on the pictures. It is not finished yet so instead I will post one of my favorite pictures from month 8 (very presidential looking)!Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-90267899232660521322010-03-15T17:40:00.000-04:002010-03-15T17:40:22.930-04:005 p.m. Bedtime, Sounds nice right?

My little guy has a self imposed bedtime of 5:00 p.m. Yes, I said 5 p.m. I get home from work with him by 4:15 that barely gives us 30 minutes before we start bedtime routine. But don't worry we get in some quality time at 5 a.m.....unfortunately, he doesn't know that you can sleep in on the weekends! The above picture is one of my favorites from his first month. But I have heard about Moms that are already planning an elaborate first birthday and sending save the date cards. Is this how 1st birthdays are done? What happened to close family, friends and a messy child with cake?Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-9265047352083147312010-03-03T20:55:00.000-05:002010-03-07T10:11:21.956-05:001 money saving idea to stretch the wedding budget: Wedding VideoIf you are planning a wedding, looking for a thank you gift or celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary Hand Made Digital memories can provide you a unique memory by creating a customized DVD movie. No money for a videographer? Think of a DVD movie instead. For my own wedding, I did not use a videographer because I wanted a more expensive dress (and to be realistic with budget). I have had no regrets. I still have a fantastic video of my wedding and the dress was worth every penny!
I never quite understood why they would have so many pictures in the album. Couldn't they pick out 3 or 4 cute ones and just send those?

Now that I am a mom, I get it. They change so fast in the first year. Day to day there can be new developments. And like many first time moms I am right there with the camera. The difference is instead of sending family and friend a slide show from a picture hosting site I started creating digital memories. Now I can include all the pictures I want and it does not take as long as scrolling through a 30 pictures slide show.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17215813828444897173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827720984523322964.post-32615589688638639872010-02-28T07:49:00.001-05:002010-03-03T21:06:53.161-05:009 months and crawlingLil B turned 9 months and on the exact day he started to crawl.
